Language Unit Wrap-Up

Go ahead and write about these questions here:

1.)   What are some of the main terms we’ve discussed in this unit? What have you learned from them?

Monolingualism, Translingualism, Code- Meshing, Code- Switching, Synthax

Through these terms, I have been able to understand the importance and commonality of speaking multiple languages. I have also come to understand the way in which language is used, how change could affect it and it’s cultural significance.

2.)   What are some of the main takeaways you’ve gotten from this unit? How / why / to what extent / if at all do they matter to you?

My main takeaway is that language and culture go hand in hand, it matters to me because I believe it is important to see their connection. I also believe that it is important to understand how identity, in general, can be shaped by aspect such as these. Another main takeaway is the idea of language having to be standard, there can be many versions of the same languages there isn’t a distinct manner in which one has it speak other than being articulate.

3.)   Why do you think we’re even talking about language in Rhetoric 105, which is a first-year writing course? What are the connections here?

I think we’re talking about language because it is important in writing, without language we wouldn’t be able to communicate. Writing essays requires the understanding of language and the ability it has to project ideas to people.
